Chelsea FC manager Jose Mourinho told Eurosport recently about his feelings on Financial Fair Play regulations and called them a “contradiction”. Mourinho believes that the regulations were put in place in order to even out the playing field and make all of the teams on equal financial footing. Instead, what Mourinho claims FFP has done is to reinforce the powers that be and the more established clubs.

Clubs like Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Barcelona have tremendous financial power as well as a global following that gives them tremendous streams of revenue. Other clubs that try to compete with them simply cannot because they do not have the revenue to buy players and stay in line with FFP regulations. Chelsea FC is a perfect example of this even though they are far more established and more popular than other noveau rich clubs like Manchester City and Paris Saint Germain.
Mourinho on the contradictions of Financial Fair Play:
"“I think Financial Fair Play is a contradiction because, when football decided to go for Financial Fair Play it was exactly to put teams in equal conditions to compete. But what happened really with the Financial Fair Play is a big protection to the historical, old, big clubs, which have a financial structure, a commercial structure, everything in place based on historical success for years and years and years.”“And the ‘new’ clubs – I call them ‘new’ clubs, those with new investment – they cannot put themselves quickly at the same level. Clubs with new owners cannot immediately attack the control and the domination of these big clubs. Chelsea is not an old, historical, huge club – but it’s also not a club with a new owner. It’s a club with the same owner for more than 10 years. A club with a very important history, with great stability too. And at this moment I think we are just below them. I can say we are a very good club with the ambition to be a great club.”Source: Eurosport"
While Chelsea FC spent big this summer they also sold some of their prized assets to balance the books. If they were not forced to sell players like Romelu Lukaku and David Luiz to balance their books, the Blues could have been even more dominant than they already have been this season.

Clubs like Manchester United and Real Madrid can spend with impunity because they have huge sponsorship deals that allow them to stay in the black, or at least as far as UEFA and FFP are concerned. The Blues are not as hamstrung as City or PSG but they have limitations they must deal with. However with a talent scout like Mourinho in the mix and a fantastic youth setup, not even FFP can hold them back.
