Nemanja Matic Warns Chelsea FC Against Complacency

Chelsea FC midfielder Nemanja Matic sat down with the Daily Mail and spoke about how the Blues can not afford to think that they have won the title just because they are still unbeaten. Matic famously lost the Portuguese title with Benfica despite the Eagles going 28 games unbeaten.

Benfica suffered their only loss of the season to FC Porto on the final match day. Porto was also undefeated coming in to the match and a draw would have seen Benfica win the title based on goal difference.

So if that is not lesson enough for the Blues then there is not much else they can learn from. Chelsea are unbeaten in 13 games but have drawn three matches, two of which to last-ditch equalizers against sides they had outplayed. Nemanja Matic was his usual imperious self on the weekend but he could not help the Blues overcome Sunderland in the latest draw Chelsea has suffered.

Nemanja Matic on going undefeated and the need to keep fighting:

"We lost three titles in two weeks. It was very hard to take. These things happen only one season in a thousand years. We played well the whole season and were unbeaten for so long. It shows you can never be certain of anything.”“If we want to win the league we must continue like this until the end. Even if we’re top and unbeaten with two games to go we must not believe we’ve won it. We must not stop until the title is ours. We must fight and at Chelsea I believe we are ready for that.”“I want to win every game. We are only interested in winning. It will be difficult to go through the whole season – we have many games to play against very good teams – but anything is possible. We know our qualities and what we can do. Maybe we can lose. Maybe we can remain unbeaten.”“Let’s see. It depends only on us. If we win every game we are going to be champions. We know that is going to be hard but we are ready to fight.”Nemanja-Matic-knows-better-Chelsea-fight-end-win-Premier-League-went-28-games-unbeaten-Benfica-missed-out.html"

We have been hearing over and over again about Chelsea FC’s need to avoid being complacent as they look to win their first trophy since 2013. The talk seems to come mostly from inside the Chelsea camp with manager Jose

Mourinho harping on and on about the need to avoid it. However with players as talented and as focused as Nemanja Matic, this should not trouble Mourinho all that much.

Matic has gone through the pain of losing a title on the last day and so have much of the players in this Chelsea squad. They know that the Premier League title race can shift in a matter of days and they must fight with everything they have to avoid last season’s fate.
