Jose Mourinho Not Focusing On Being ‘Invincible’

Jose Mourinho told the press that he does not think it is possible for Chelsea FC to go undefeated and that he does not care about it. He elaborated on the point by saying that losing five games and winning five equals more points than simply drawing ten matches. That means, in theory, that Chelsea FC would not settle for a draw in a match that they believe they can win.

While all of that sounds well and good, it is unrealistic to think that Mourinho and the Blues would never play for a draw. Sometimes it is smarter to take the point when it is available than to force the issue and take a loss. He may not set out for a draw from kickoff but depending on the situation, that may end up being Mourhinho’s chosen tactic.

Jose Mourinho on not caring about going undefeated:

"“The first thing is that I don’t think it’s possible [to go unbeaten all season]. The other thing is we are not playing for that. Because, if you play for that and that is one of your objectives, maybe you draw too many matches because you don’t take risks to try and win matches.”“You are happy just to be undefeated. If you get 10 draws, you get 10 points. If you win five and lose five, you make 15 points. I’d prefer 15 points and lost matches than 10 points and be undefeated.”“But we aren’t focusing on that. We don’t…we are not going to play for the 0-0 to be undefeated after 21 matches. No way. We are going to play matches to win. And, as a result, sometimes we will lose.”Source: The Guardian"

If you ask any Chelsea FC fan if they cared more about being “invincible” than winning the title, they would call you crazy and say the title is priority number one. While it would be nice to knock off the Arsenal team that was the last to go undefeated in the league, that does not appear to be in forefront of Jose Mourinho’s mind. He is focused on winning the title and if the Blues happen to go undefeated while they achieve it then all the better.
