The Blues of course would have preferred to face League One side Sheffield United after they defeated Southampton but the Blues have owned Liverpool in recent times so no harm done. This match will give the Reds a chance to avenge their crushing loss to Chelsea late last season that put a very large dent in their Premier League title hopes but this is hardly the same team. They are of course without talismanic striker Luis Suarez who has been replaced by an ineffective Mario Balotelli and a fragile Daniel Sturridge.
Chelsea FC fans are loving the prospect of stopping Liverpool yet again from lifting silverware and the thought of smashing them at Stamford Bridge in the second leg is especially appealing. There have even been jokes that the Blues will be playing their youngsters in the first leg because the Blues know how to win at Anfield with a B team.
Although with the way that Mourinho has been approaching the rest of this competition then there is no way he will not send out a full strength squad in the first leg to try and put the tie to bed. This might be especially important with a date against Manchester City in the league on January 31st so expect the best eleven to feature at Anfield.
