Prior to the loss against Newcastle United, all the media talk about Chelsea FC was about them going unbeaten in the Premier League and becoming the next “invincibles”. That talk droned on and on and made for plenty of stories for the media to cover but unfortunately that storyline is dead. The one cropping up now is talk of Chelsea FC winning the quadruple this season. In case you do not know, the quadruple would entail Chelsea winning the Premier League, FA Cup, Capital One Cup, and of course the Champions League.

The only other team in English football to even come close to a quadruple is the 2008-09 Manchester United squad that won the FA Community Shield, Football League Cup, Premier League, and FIFA Club World Cup. The League Cup and Premier League are good achievements but the other two trophies do not quite count as a quadruple considering they are either a one-off or two-off to win it all. This is especially the case for the Community Shield which is essentially a glorified preseason friendly.

Sure, they could end up winning all four but it is far too early to even consider it. The Blues are in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a good draw against Watford and are in the semifinals of the League Cup where they will face Liverpool.
They are also top in the Premier League but Manchester City is only three points behind and we know how dangerous they can be. Even through Chelsea FC’s undefeated run they were only six points behind and have managed to easily keep pace with the Blues despite suffering through a rash of injuries. As for the Champions League, the Blues face a tough draw against a PSG side that took them to the brink of elimination last season.

The only way that Chelsea could achieve the impossible and win the quadruple is if absolutely everything goes right. They can suffer no major injuries or even minor injuries to major players. No players can receive any suspensions, either for violent conduct or yellow card accumulation. Jose Mourinho has to make the right lineup and substitution decision every time. None of the players can have a bad day at the office, and of course we would need a substantial bit of luck.
All this talk of a quadruple is lovely but it can become a bit of a distraction if it persists the way the invincibles talk did. At this point Chelsea FC fans would probably settle for a major trophy or two, something like a Premier League/Champions League double would suffice.
