Jose Mourinho: Eden Hazard Will Be A Chelsea FC Legend

On the verge of signing a big money contract extension, Jose Mourinho believes that Eden Hazard will be a Chelsea FC legend when he retires from the club. The extension is set to make Eden Hazard the highest paid player at the club and the young Belgian deserves every penny of it. He has been the best player for the Blues this season and has been the lynchpin of most of the club’s successful attacking forays. .

The rumors of the contract extension began early in the season but Hazard has yet to put pen to paper. Whatever the reason for the delay, Mourinho does not seem to be concerned with the delay. Mourinho told Sky Sports that “[Hazard] will (sign)” and that he “was never worried about it” because “everything was very clear about their intentions and their happiness to stay with Chelsea”.

Mourinho believes that the club will handle the situation in a timely fashion and said, “it becomes a numbers situation. When it becomes a number situation, I’m more than happy to be out. But my club always told me that the situation would finish with a new contract, so I was never worried about that.”

Chelsea FC paid £32 million to Lille in 2012  for the services of Hazard and it is now looking like a bargain. He won the PFA Young Player of the Year award last year and is certainly in the running for the senior version of the award this season. Hazard has notched nine goals and six assists in 30 appearances and has made vital contributions that do not appear in the post-match boxscore.

As far as becoming a legend, the Blues have only won a single trophy in the two-plus years that Eden Hazard has been at the club and Mourinho believes that is the key. Mourinho was asked if Hazard could become a club legend and he said, “I think so, I think so. He needs to win titles because titles make players’ history.”

Mourinho continued and said, “I don’t know players who are considered legends in clubs without winning titles, so he has to do that but the potential, I think, everybody knows”. Everyone is very aware of the potential Eden has and he is coming in to his own this season. He has always been a dynamic attacking player full of fancy dribbles and technical ability, but now he is pairing that with defensive effort and excellent tracking back.

Hazard is showing the work rate that Jose Mourinho demands from his players and after being called out for a lack of it last season, he has answered the criticism with his fantastic performances. There is little doubt that if Hazard continues along the same path he is currently that he will become a Chelsea FC legend one day. He does need to win several more trophies before he can join the likes of Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole but with this contract extension he will have plenty of time to do so.
