James Milner Thinks Manchester City Can Surge Past Chelsea FC

With the results on New Years Day in the books, Chelsea FC and Manchester City are level on all things, points, goals scored, and goals conceded. So where does that leave us? With Chelsea FC ahead of Manchester City based solely on alphabetical order. City closed an eight point gap in a very short time and midfielder and sometimes false-nine James Milner believes that the Sky Blues can surge ahead of the real Blues.

Milner was the Citizens’ hero in the FA Cup and he spoke to Sky Sports after his double against Sheffield Wednesday about how City can move ahead. He said “we’ll be looking to open up a little gap of our own” and that “all we can do is concentrate on our games and if we can get the results we want to get, it depends on how Chelsea do”. Seems like a straightforward enough analysis of the situation there James. City and Chelsea will both look to win the rest of their games but of course that is not very likely or realistic.

With the regular pitfalls of a tough Premier League schedule it is already hard enough to win the league and even tougher with a rival breathing down your neck. On top of the dangerous league schedule, both clubs are in the advanced stages of the FA Cup and Champions League, with Chelsea also in the League Cup semifinals. The already difficult task of winning the league becomes even more difficult with all of these midweek distractions and other competitions thrown in to the mix.

Both managers will have to figure out a way to rotate their squads without sacrificing too much quality. Manuel Pellegrini has already dealt with a great deal of injuries including his top two strikers Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko suffering lengthy injuries. These injuries lead most fans to believe that City would fall even further behind Chelsea but instead up stepped Frank Lampard and James Milner to save the day. Milner played the false nine role to good effect and Lampard scored important goals like he always has.

City have always had the necessary firepower to fight Chelsea until the end of the season for the title. They suffered some early season slip-ups but with the help of experienced players like Milner, they were able to claw back in to the title race. It will likely come down to the last few matches of the season and it should be a race to remember for everyone involved.
