Juan Cuadrado Could Be Sold If Buyout Clause Is Met

Chelsea FC target Juan Cuadrado has been the subject of much of the transfer talk surrounding the Blues this window. The livewire Colombia winger is considered by many to be the solution to Chelsea FC’s long-standing right wing problem.

The Blues obviously have the left wing spot all sewed up because of the excellent performances by Eden Hazard but the same cannot be said about the right. Willian’s effort is always admirable but it would be silly to suggest that he was worth the 30 million pound fee the Blues paid for him. The young Brazilian often ruins more counters than he creates and is just not the type of player Chelsea though they were getting.

In Ukraine and Russia, Willian was consistently taking on defenders, leading blistering counters, and making the killer pass. These days he can still be counted on every blue moon to score a spectacular goal but on several occasions he robs his teammates of goalscoring opportunities because of his poor passing.

What Willian lacks in refinement, Juan Cuadrado has in bunches, or so we hope. He was a a constant threat for Colombia during the World Cup and was one of the tournament’s outstanding players alongside his teammate James Rodriguez. He has spent two and a half years at Fiorentina and has been a vital part of their challenge for a Champions League place this season.

In two years and in 106 appearances he has scored 26 goals. It is not an extraordinary return but for a player that is a pure winger, it is above average. His contributions to the team extend past just scoring goals as he has contributed 18 assists in the same period of time.

So it is understandable why a club like Fiorentina would not want to sell one of their best players. However one of the realities of being a smaller club is being forced to sell your best players when one of the giants of football comes around. Fiorentina executive Vincenzo Guerini told Inside Futbol that “The risk of losing the player is there, but we as a club are prepared for any eventuality. There is nothing, however [to report at the moment]. The player has renewed his contract and is happy here, plus there is a very high clause. We are prepared for a possible replacement, if someone pays the clause.”

So there you have it, Juan Cuadrado could be sold to Chelsea FC but only if they meet his exit clause which is reported to be around 26 million pounds. That is not an astronomical fee but it is big enough where Chelsea must decide if it is worth the investment. Will they be getting someone who is full of drive and effort but with little end product like Willian?

Or will they be getting another difference maker that can take advantage of all the attention given to Eden Hazard and Diego Costa. Is Juan Cuadrado the missing piece in Jose Mourinho’s silverware puzzle? Risk is what makes good teams in to great ones and time will tell if Cuadrado is worth the money and the risk.
