Didier Drogba Wants To Play Another Year For Chelsea FC

Didier Drogba was expected to announce his impending retirement at some point this season but instead he appears to have decided to play another year. Drogba spoke to French sporting news network Telefoot and said that he would like an “encore” with Chelsea FC next season. What that means for the future of the Chelsea strikeforce is unclear but it may have a lasting impact.

The Ivory Coast striker has been extremely effective in his limited role at Chelsea this season with 6 goals in 27 appearances. Of course that may not sound like much but many of those appearances have been late in matches with Chelsea looking to simply run out the clock and kill off the match.

He scored in three straight matches against NK Maribor, the opener against Manchester United, and the winner against Shrewsbury Town in the Capital One Cup while both Diego Costa and Loic Remy were injured. Drogba also scored the vital second goal against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League to seal the match for Chelsea. This was not the player we expected as the 36 year old striker turned back the clock and showed the world that he was still capable of magic.

The tweet above translates to “Next season I will still be a player of #Chelsea” and as stated above, the impact of this decision by Drogba may have a lasting impact. Of course the decision to stay with Chelsea or not is not Drogba’s to make as the club will have to offer him another one year contract. However if a fit and effective Didier Drogba is willing to stay for another season then Jose Mourinho would likely make room for him in the squad.

The only issues that this may have is that it may put off Chelsea from signing another striker who could be more effective than Drogba. The Blues may decide not to sign a younger striker the way they did when they were banking on Fernando Torres coming good. Not to say that Drogba is as ineffective as Torres was at times but the dynamic may be the same in the sense that there would not be enough room in the squad for that additional striker.

Chelsea would not choose Drogba over Loic Remy who has been excellent this season for the Blues. He seems to score every time he plays and has managed 5 goals in 17 appearances and 3 of which have come in the Premier League. Remy also scored a vital goal for Chelsea against Manchester City on Saturday and looked every inch the dangerous striker we all know he can be.

If Chelsea were to go in to next season with the same strike force as this year with Drogba, Costa, and Remy they would still be in excellent shape. As others have pointed out, this may impact the future of Patrick Bamford as many have hoped he would be Chelsea’s third striker next season. However Bamford is still just 21 years old and as long as he is happy being out on loan and in a good situation then he will be fine. So let Didier Drogba come back for one more year, even if he will take a step down the Chelsea striker pecking order.
