Romelu Lukaku Wants To Play For A Top Club
Yes, you read that headline right. Everton’s Romelu Lukaku recently divulged his true ambitions for his career and said that he wants to play for a big club one day. This comes just days after he missed two golden chances to be the hero for the Toffees against Chelsea FC and did not play well overall. He was kept in check by a Premier League rookie in Kurt Zouma and did not look a bit like the “complete striker” he believes he is.

Lukaku spoke to The Sun, as quoted in the Express, and said, “It was brilliant to play at Chelsea and I had a good reception. They know I’m a good player but that I want to develop so I can eventually get back to playing for a club like Chelsea. I don’t have a secret ambition to rejoin — there are other clubs in the world. I just want to grow as a player and eventually arrive at a top club again.”
Well thank you for clearing that up for us Romelu. You want to play for a club like Chelsea but you do not want to rejoin Chelsea. If we recall correctly, Lukaku was already playing for a top club in Chelsea and was given a chance to compete for a starting role. Instead he decided to leave a top club and go to a much smaller club in Everton where he would be the unquestioned starter by default. To put it simply, Romelu Lukaku had the chance to play as a the second or even first striker for a top club but chose the easy way out.
Everton made the Belgian their record signing to the tune of £28million and he has been a decent player for them. Lukaku has managed 10 goals in 33 appearances which is a good return, but not one that you pay close to £28 million for. Everton could have spent that same amount on a player and striker with much less hype surrounding him and gotten a similar return. They also would not be getting Lukaku’s big mouth as part of that transaction.
As if we did not already know, Romelu Lukaku has a problem keeping his mouth shut and showing the world exactly how immature he is. When he was on loan at West Brom or Everton he would often discuss his standing with his parent club in the media. He would make claims that he needs Champions League football and that he is a complete striker. Lukaku already alienated one fanbase with those comments and he looks to be on his way to alienating a second.
Telling a newspaper that you want to leave your current club because you think you are above it just a few months after joining is an excellent way to do that. It will be interesting to see what kind of reception the youngster gets at Goodison Park the next time he steps on to the pitch.

Some may chalk up Romelu Lukaku’s comments to youthful exuberance but it is more an ego and lack of advisement issue. Someone in his camp needs to explain to the striker that it is not always wise to speak your mind. He needs to be told time and time again that the best way to do your talking is with excellent play on the pitch. He is a fine young player with the potential to be very good but he has shown that he would rather be handed success than earn it.
Lukaku had his wish of playing for a top club but he wanted to be coddled and given a starting role based solely on his potential. Football is a meritocracy and the only thing that matters is how well you play. Romelu Lukaku may one day get his wish of playing for a top club but he must fix his attitude before that dream comes true.
