Chelsea FC manager Jose Mourinho shared his anger and shame at the racist incident that occurred on the Paris metro after the draw with PSG. A group of Chelsea FC supporters racially abused a black man who was trying to board the metro car they were on. The supporters did not allow him to board the train even after he pointed to an open space where he could stand and sang “we’re racist and that’s the way we like it” at the man.

The incident caused a firestorm of controversy that has exploded far beyond the realm of just football. News outlets who do not often cover football, save for perhaps the World Cup, picked up the story and ran with it. The video was shown as an example of the racist and hooligan-ish culture that still exists in English football. The man who was abused, identified as Souleymane S., was brought on several networks to speak and he expressed that he wanted the supporters jailed.
Chelsea FC of course acted swiftly and suspended the supporters who were identified from attending matches at Stamford Bridge. The club also released a statement apologizing for their behavior and condemning the incident. Jose Mourinho, as the face of the club, of course made sure that his feelings were known when it came to the incident. Mourinho spoke to the press and said, “We feel ashamed but maybe we shouldn’t because I refuse to be connected with these people.I’m connected with Chelsea and the many good things this club defends. I left Chelsea in 2007 and I couldn’t wait to be back.”
Mourinho continued, “I felt ashamed when I knew what happened, but I repeat I’m a proud Chelsea manager because I know what this club is”. The manager also shared the sentiment that the club should bring the abused man to the club and let him “feel what Chelsea is, because in this moment he maybe has wrong idea of what Chelsea football club is”.
Mourinho ended by apologizing once again and distancing himself from the supporters who committed this disgusting act. “I repeat, I feel ashamed at being connected with this sad episode that happened and I have no words, unless you want me to stay here two hours repeating the same thing, because my feeling is the feeling of everyone at this club. We feel very, very sorry about it. We want to fight it, we feel ashamed, and we apologise to the gentleman,” said Mourinho.

The gesture of bringing Souleymane to the club would be a welcome one but only of course if he is willing to make the trip. He has shown the willingness to come on television and condemn what happened to him so perhaps he would be willing the olive branch that Chelsea FC and Jose Mourinho have extended to him. A trip to Stamford Bridge would not make him forget what happened or absolve anyone of responsibility but it would be a nice gesture for the man and his family after what must have been a torrid week.
