John Terry Deserves New Deal – Jose Mourinho
Chelsea FC manager Jose Mourinho believes that John Terry deserves a new contract with the Blues as they are set to offer him another one year contract. Earlier in the week it was revealed that Terry would be happy to sign another one year deal with Chelsea but there has been no formal offer yet. Terry acknowledged that the club had more pressing issues such as signing Eden Hazard so he was not too worried about the situation.

Terry’s approach to his contract is another example of how he is such an excellent leader. Many players, especially ones as accomplished as Terry is, may be causing a fuss in the media about wanting to sign a new deal. They may also be causing issues because they want a long-term deal rather than the one year deals Chelsea has been giving to players over 30. Of course John Terry has proven time and time again that he bleeds Chelsea blue and is a different breed of footballer. He always puts his team ahead of his own interests and he is usually rewarded for that.
Jose Mourinho spoke about the situation and reiterated that he wants to bring his skipper back for another season. Mourinho said, “I think everybody wants to stay and especially him who has been here all his life.He accepted our policy of going year after year with a smile and he accepted it as a challenge. Last year he won the challenge and this year he is winning the right of getting a one-year extension. Sooner or later he will get the season contract he deserves.”
Terry has been the Blues’ most consistent defender this season and many believe that he is still the best central defender in the Premier League. Vincent Kompany was knocking on his door for that honor but has fallen off quite a bit the season due to a combination of injury and not being in form. The fact that he is still playing at such a high level at 34 makes this all the more remarkable.
The question of course is how long can Terry keep playing at this level? Can he still be the best defender in the Premier League for another season? Maybe another two? Whatever the length of time is, the Blues have to move on from the skipper eventually. There is a long list of rumored successors to his place in the team with Kurt Zouma being the most realistic obviously because he is already a member of the Blues.

The names of other successors such as Mats Hummels, Sergio Ramos, and Raphael Varane have been bandied about but how many of these players would be willing to join Chelsea and play second fiddle to Terry this summer? Perhaps the Blues will bring him on for one more season but begin to phase him out as the season goes along. That could go out the window if he maintains his level of play but that could be a good problem to have. John Terry has expressed his desire to become a manager so whenever he does hang up his Chelsea boots a transition to Mourinho’s coaching staff may be in the cards for the skipper.
