Diego Costa To Maintain Aggressive Style In League Cup Final

Chelsea FC striker Diego Costa has become a lightning rod of controversy this season for his style of play but the striker promises that he will not change it in the League Cup Final. Costa has been suspended twice this season, once for yellow card accumulation, and the second time as a retroactive ban for stamping on Liverpool centerback Emre Can in the League Cup Semifinals. Some of those yellows and even the stamp ban were believed to be given unjustly because the Brazilian hit man has a bit of a reputation for unsporting play.

Diego Costa is known for his aggressive but not over the top style. He tussles and scraps with opposing defenders and seeks to make the opposition centerbacks as miserable as possible for 90 minutes. What he does not do however is make reckless challenges or go over the top on tackles like a certain Burnley forward does. That style of play often pushes defenders over the edge but unfortunately for Costa he is usually the one being targeted by the referee even though his actions are within the bounds of the rules.

Costa will be looking to employ some of those same tactics and the Tottenham backline on Sunday and promises that he will not change how he plays. He said,  “I’m not going to change my way of playing. I do know now that I have to be a little bit more careful because it’s not the same when I do something or when someone else does it. Something I do, it’s talked about much more than another player. I have to be extra careful but I’m never going to change the way I play. That’s what got me here. That’s the way I play.”

His combative style is indeed what got Diego Costa to Chelsea as his aggression and non-stop effort helps him score goals that many players could not. He is not especially fast or technically sound but he does have a goalscorer’s instincts as well as the confidence and drive to outwork his opponents. Almost all of Diego Costa’s goals from inside the six yard box as he uses his instincts and strength to beat defenders to the ball. If he loses some of that aggression then he may lose some of that goalscoring ability.

The Spanish striker has been in a bit of a drought but much of that can be attributed to rust accumulated during his three match suspension. He is still tied atop the Premier League goalscoring charts with 17 goals but a goal on Sunday would be much more valuable. Chelsea have had a big game striker in Didier Drogba for almost 10 years now but it is time for Diego Costa to step up and take that mantle away from the Ivorian legend.
