Jose Mourinho Picks Surprise Man Of The Match For Capital One Cup Victory
After the Capital One Cup Final, Chelsea FC captain John Terry was chosen as the man of the match for his massive performance. Terry scored the opening goal at end of the first half off a Willian set piece and was instrumental all match long. His manager Jose Mourinho had a different opinion though of who the man of the match should be and it was a reflection of his team-first attitude.

Mourinho was asked about who should be the man of the match and he responded by choosing three players who did not even feature in the final against Tottenham. Mouriho said, “Man of the match? They are Thibaut Courtois and Filipe Luis, who played fantastic against Liverpool. Man of the match was Andreas Christensen who played well against Shrewsbury. There are more than John Terry because we are a team. I am proud of the guys.”
The Portuguese manager has always preached a team-first mentality for his squads. He does not allow for much room for egos and that perhaps is why he was run out of town in Madrid because of big headed players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos. At Chelsea he does not appear to have that problem and has his players putting their egos aside. Players like Filipe Luis and Thibaut Courtois went from starting in a Champions League final to not featuring in the League Cup final but have not said a peep about their standing in the team.
Instead they put their heads down, play football, and always say and do the right things. Mourinho is the master man manager and always goes out of his way to reward those who sacrifice for him. He puts all the focus on his players in the media when they win but makes sure all the media does is talk about him and his antics when they lose. He was asked about the performance in the final and said, “My players were fantastic. Finals are not for playing they are for winning. We did not have problems. They had a couple of chances but nothing else. We knew we would be dangerous on the counter and we played like we should play a final.”

Finals are indeed for winning Jose and you are truly blessed with a squad full of players who will put their bodies on the line for you and the team. With a comment or two he reminds the media and his players that he does not favor anyone in the team over the other for a reason other than pure footballing ability. He rallied his troops today against a tough and dynamic opponent and it was Chelsea that triumphed. As Mourinho said, it was not just the 11 men on the field that won the Capital One Cup, it was the entire club and every single player on that squad as well.
