Final Thoughts…

Mourinho has now maintained his 100% record in finals in English Football and the club can finally move away from the negativity of the last few weeks and focus on winning an unprecedented treble. The Capital One Cup was a great stepping stone but it is by no means a job done for Mourinho and the boys. The players can take the morale boost from this game into Wednesday’s Premier League game at Upton Park as they would need it to combat the fatigue that will most likely come after Sunday’s game.

Chelsea’s bumper new deal with Yokohama, worth a reported 40 million pounds per annum, is a huge boost for the club and adequately reflects the club’s current status as one of the biggest clubs in Europe. It now means they have the second most lucratic shirt sponsorship deal behind Manchester United (who earn a reported 53 million pounds per year from Chevrolet) in England (and probably in Europe as well).

Although I do have reservations about how “Yokohama” would look on the club’s jersey next season. But if it is in any way as cool as the current one with Samsung, then I would be happy with that. I still feel, though, that the club could renegotiate their deal with Adidas as what they are offering Manchester United to kit them next season dwarfs what Chelsea currently receive from them.

It was double celebration for the Chelsea as Manchester City were unable to further close the gap on them with their 2-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield which ended a miserable week for them after their defeat to Barcelona on Tuesday at the Etihad Stadium by the same score line. After scoring 9 goals in their last 2 league games, Pellegrini and Nasri claimed that they are getting back to their best, especially with the return of Yaya Toure.

Their last 2 games will probably have brought their morale down, which is only good for Chelsea. They do have an advantage as they now only have Manchester United to contend with (and recent clashes between both clubs indicate that it might not be a problem for them) while Chelsea still have to play Manchester United, Liverpool (both at home) and Arsenal (away). So it’s not all plain sailing for Chelsea. But every advantage they can get could be pivotal.
