Final Thoughts…

Ivanovic may have become a force to reckon with going forward, but his lack of pace and huge frame makes it difficult for him to play the marauding full back role effectively as he doesn’t get back quickly enough to fulfill his defensive duties. Recent reports have indicated that Chelsea want to take advantage of Nathaniel Clyne’s contract situation at Southampton to sign him.

But as far as I am concerned, for that to happen, Ivanovic has to leave. If not, Chelsea FC need to sign another left-back and get Azpilicueta playing in his natural position. Bertrand’s performance on Sunday showed the folly of Chelsea FC’s decision to sell him as he held his own against Willian and Ivanovic.

Also, Chelsea FC need to make the signing of another top class central defender and combative central midfielder a priority for the new season so the team does not face a repeat of the issues that have clouded this one. Mourinho’s unwillingness to rotate indicates his lack of trust in his fall back options on the bench.

If Chelsea can win their game at hand, it would take them 9 points clear with 9 games to go, meaning that all they would need is 7 wins from the remaining 9 games to be sure of the league title, a feat that is highly achievable as their exit from the UCL means they have just 10 games left to play till the end of the season. The games against Manchester United, Liverpool (at home) and Arsenal (away) could play a key part in where the title ends up come May.
