The Premier League

These are currently only proposals and as Greg Dyke tactfully puts it there now needs to be a period of consultation with the concerned stakeholders. The biggest obstacle to this plan is the Premier League.

The Premier League, under its agreement with the FA have the power to veto any such decisions. The FA have to get 14 out of 20 Premier League clubs to vote yes to it, a 2/3rd majority.

This is the equivalent of getting Turkeys to vote in favour of Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners!!!

What is in it for the Premier League then?

Will England winning a tournament mean increased exposure for them?

The simple answer is no.

The reality is the Premier League will get more exposure through its clubs winning club competitions like the EUFA Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup!

More exposure means more money, more money means even more power.

As a business therefore, the Premier League is not going to reduce its own earning potential just because a bunch of blazers at the FA politely ask them to!

As a business the Premier League is not concerned about the nationality of its employees. Any business is going to get the best value for money employee it can. If English players are of equal skill levels and available at similar prices then English players will be employed, it’s simple economics.
