Terry, as quoted by ChelseaFC.com, had this to say about the deal: “I’m delighted to have signed an extension to my contract with Chelsea. After adding another major trophy to my collection this month I hope myself, the players and manager can continue to bring success to our club. Playing for this great club makes me so proud. And as always I would like to thank the fans who have continually supported me.”

The major trophy he is referring to is the League Cup in which John Terry captained the side to victory over Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month. Chelsea is also in pole position to add yet another trophy to Terry’s cabinet as they sit atop the Premier League with nine matches to go. Terry has been the driving force behind Chelsea’s run to the top and has been by far the best central defender in the league.

John Terry has experienced quite the resurgence since the 2012 season when he only made 14 Premier League appearances for the Blues. He was constantly battling injuries and was often accused of undermining managers such as Andre Villas-Boas and Rafa Benitez. Many believed that his career in Chelsea blue was over after he struggled for form under both managers but he has proven the doubters wrong.

Since Jose Mourinho returned, John Terry has been Chelsea’s best defender by leaps and bounds and has done so more than 15 years after his debut with the club. Mourinho has acknowledged how good Terry has been time and time again this season and he insisted that Terry was offered this new deal because of his play, not as a tribute for his service.

Mourinho said, “This new contract is not to say ‘thank you very much’; it is because John continues to perform. He is a top defender. I am happy that he completely deserves this new contract after a season where he has already played 40 matches.” Terry is a top defender indeed and Sky Sports released a report on why they rate him as the best central defender in England.

As a player considered the heart and soul of Chelsea Football Club, John Terry has also been one of the club’s best players this season. He has earned this contract extension with his play and the club saw no reason not to offer him an extension. There may come a time when the club decides to move on from Terry and focus on the future but there is no sense in letting go of the best central defender in the Premier League.
