Diego Costa Says Spain Career Has Not Yet Started

Chelsea FC’s Diego Costa suffered yet another hamstring injury that has knocked him out of contention for a place in the Spain nation team during this international break. Earlier in the season during the first international break, Costa also suffered a hamstring injury and missed one out of Spain’s two fixtures. This time it appears he will miss both fixtures during this break and possible Chelsea’s next Premier League match against Stoke City.

Costa expressed his frustration with the situation in an interview with Marca and said, “I was in good form, I thought everything was finally going to work out…I really wanted to prove my form and my worth… but again it [injury] happened”. Injuries are also derailing his club career a bit as well as they forced him out of the Champions League Final last season and saw him miss a handful of fixtures for Chelsea this season.

When asked about what his history with the Spain national team is, Diego Costa replied “My history with the national team is that it still hasn’t really started. I haven’t done anything yet. The national team is something I think of”. He was apologetic and frustrated in his response and said, “I am sorry that I cannot bring what I would like to. Something always happens when I get close to playing for Spain. It bothers me from a personal standpoint but I hope this will end. I’ve gone through a lot to be in the national team and I hope good times will come”.

What he is referring to is his relatively late international debut and the fact that he made a difficult choice to represent Spain over his native Brazil. Costa was labeled public enemy number one in Brazil after choosing Spain, especially in a year when Brazil would host the World Cup. His decision has not quite worked out yet as Costa seems to be a square peg in a round hole.

His style of play has not gelled well with the Spanish national team yet but that could just be an issue of time. He has only made seven appearances for Spain and he is a very talented striker, something they have not had since Fernando Torres and David Villa were terrorizing opposing defenses. The same could be said of Brazil who have not had a striker anyone feared since Adriano was at his best with Inter Milan.

Diego Costa has always been a player that played by his own rules and his decision to switch nationalities reflects that. His international career may have had a stuttering start but at just 26 years old he has plenty of time to get things on track and excel in a Spain shirt.
