Chelsea FC: Diego Costa Credited With League Cup Final Goal

Somewhere out there, Kyle Walker just breathed a huge sigh of relief. The Tottenham Hotspur defender was originally credited with an own goal in the League Cup final against Chelsea FC but now it appears that the goal has been credited back to Diego Costa.

The goal came in the 55th minute of the match and it effectively ended it as a contest, although Tottenham did not put up much of a fight after the opening 30 minutes. It came at the end of a Cesc Fabregas pass down the channel to Diego Costa. Costa was one on one with Kyle Walker and he beat the defender to the byline, made a move on Walker to give himself some space and let fly a shot with his left foot.

The shot could have easily gone wide or across the face of goal but it took a deflection off Walker’s boot and past Hugo Lloris into the Tottenham net. Costa celebrated the goal as if it was his own but the Chelsea fans could not care less at the moment who the goal was credited to, they only cared that it was the second goal of the match. To be fair to Costa, the goal was mostly his doing as he still had a good deal of work to do after receiving the pass from Fabregas.

After this goal was credited to Diego Costa, the Chelsea FC striker now sits on 20 goals this season. The goal in the League Cup Final was his first outside of the Premier league which is a remarkable record considering how prolific he has been. This is by no means a vintage or world-class season for Costa but he has shown that he is Chelsea’s most potent striking option since Didier Drogba in 2012.

Oddly enough the last three Chelsea players do you have 20 goals in a season are all Spanish internationals. Fernando Torres, one Motta, and of course Diego Costa who is only Spanish on paper. With Chelsea out of the FA cup in the champions league Diego Costco will not have another chance to score in another competition this season but he still has plenty of games to pad that 19 goals and hopefully when the Golden Boot.

His competition in Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane have a few penalties to their name but Costa has yet to score or even take one this season. Costa’s health is also a concern because of a hamstring injury but the smart money is on Costa scoring at least a few more goals before the end of the season.
