Chelsea FC: Oriol Romeu Looking For Stability

Chelsea FC midfielder Oriol Romeu is spending this season on loan at VfB Stuttgart and he is hoping to finally find some stability in his career. Romeu also spent last season out on loan with Valencia where he struggled to fight through injuries to make a regular place in the team. When healthy he was selected often for Valencia but knee and leg injuries hampered his progress.

Romeu was brought in from Barcelona in 2011 for a reported €5 million when he was just 20 years old and a first refusal buyback option for €10 million was included. Unlike most of the youngsters Chelsea FC buys, he was not immediately sent out on loan and was given a first team number and a place in the squad.

In his first season with Chelsea FC, Romeu made 24 appearances for the Blues including 16 in the Premier League. He was given his chance to shine under manager Andres Villas-Boas and he took the chances well.

Oriol Romeu on looking for stability in his career:

"“I started the season with Chelsea because the coaching staff wanted me to renew my contract until 2017. Mourinho treated me very well and received several offers from Germany, one from Celta, and finally I opted for the Stuttgart. Both the coach and the Chelsea sporting director recommended that I come here because it was a long term project with a good manager. In close to 30 games for Stuttgart have found continuity and rhythm that every player needs. I saw what the president said. In June I’ll speak with Chelsea to know their intentions. After two seasons on loan, I think the ideal would be settling into a club to get some stability.”"

In 2012-13 under Roberto Di Matteo, Chelsea FC saw a mass exodus in midfield with the likes of Yossi Benayoun, Raul Meireles, and Michael Essien all being sold or sent on loan. Romeu looked set to feature regularly in the first team but in December 2012 he suffered a major knee injury and missed the rest of the season.

It was terrible luck for the youngster as Chelsea were thin in midfield even before he went down with injury and he could have made a major impact on the team. Instead he was sent on loan the following season to Valencia and now he appears to be on his way out of Stamford Bridge despite featuring for the club in preseason.

He has played well at Stuttgart this season and at one several points in the season he was a constant starter in midfield. Between December and mid-February, Romeu started seven league matches in a row for the club but appears to have lost his place for the bottom club in the Bundesliga. It is unclear what the value of Oriol Romeu is at this point but he has done little to suggest that he is worth more than what Chelsea FC paid for him initially.

Perhaps Jose Mourinho will not sell him on and bring him to add depth to the midfield as the club is a bit short on holding central midfielders. Romeu has had poor luck with injuries in his career but this season he has been fit and hopefully he has turned a corner.
