Chelsea FC: Loic Remy’s Vital Contributions

With Diego Costa leading the line for Chelsea FC so often this season and scoring 19 goals in the Premier League, it is easy to forget a player who has been so vital in recent weeks. If Chelsea FC does indeed lift the Premier League trophy this season, Loic Remy’s vital contributions will be remembered in the dying weeks of the season.

Remy came on against Hull City a few weeks ago after the Blues gave up a two goal lead in a matter of minutes. They raced ahead through goals from Eden Hazard and Diego Costa but allowed Hull back in with two disastrous goals. Diego Costa limped off with a half hour left in the match and he was replaced by the French striker. Chelsea desperately needed a third and Remy answered the call with a scuffed shot past the Hull keeper. It was his first touch of the match and it was the only one that truly mattered.

Weeks later, Chelsea faced Stoke City and again took an early lead. Stoke equalized through an incredible goal from Charlie Adam and again Chelsea FC needed a hero. This time it was Eden Hazard that did the hard work but Remy showed his determination and will by sprinting to follow the Belgian on the break. He was rewarded with a easy tap-in goal that gave Chelsea FC the lead for good.

Remy’s contributions were not just limited to the past two matches. In January after the Blues built up a five point lead against Manchester City after being level after New Years Day, the two teams faced off at Stamford Bridge. Diego Costa was suspended for the match so it was Loic Remy who was called to duty and he responded with an excellent goal against the champions. The match ended in a draw but Remy’s goal was vital as it kept the Chelsea lead at five points at the top of the table.

Jose Mourinho praised Remy’s contribution and he showed his appreciation for what he has done for the team. Mourinho said, “He’s a great boy and his contribution for us is already crucial with these two match-winners in the last two matches. He trains fantastically well. He keeps himself in great condition to come to matches, even without many, many minutes to be ready for us, so I’m really pleased and everybody’s pleased for him.”

Mourinho also spoke about the goal he scored against Stoke because of the hustle he showed to make it happen. Mourinho said of the goal, “He sprinted to score what I call an easy goal. But I love strikers to score easy goals. The tap-in when the goalkeeper has an incomplete save, attack the ball in a low cross, rebounds – I love the easy goals from a striker. So I’m really happy with him.”

Who would not be happy with a striker that only plays every few weeks and still scores important goals? Remy has proven his worth time and time again and even if Diego Costa misses a few more matches, including a clash with Manchester United, the Blues are in very capable hands.
