Well who did not see this one coming? After the comments made earlier this week by Fiorentina manager Vincenzo Montella that Chelsea winger Mohamed Salah would be at the club for at least one more season, it appears that they plan on making it official very soon.

According to the Evening Standard,”Fiorentina have decided to trigger the option to extend Mohamed Salah’s loan next season before buying him on a permanent basis next year.” The loan deal involving Salah was a unique one in that it had several options and clauses so they could essentially use this half-season as a trial period for the player. Some loans of course are purely for the player’s development but Mohamed Salah’s is a rent with an option to buy type loan.

Instead of just buying him outright for a fee reported to be around £9.5 million, Fiorentina have decided to spend just under £2m to extend the loan for one more season. After the 2016 season, the Viola have the option to spend that £9.5 million along with some bonuses to make Salah a permanent member of the club..

The loan extension is a good way for Fiorentina to make sure that Mohamed Salah is not just a half-season wonder in Serie A. He has been an absolute revelation since joining the Italian club and boasts an excellent goalscoring record with 7 goals and 2 assists in just 9 appearances. He helped lead Fiorentina to the brink of the Coppa Italia final although they fell just short after taking a 2-0 goal in the first leg in Turin.

Chelsea FC paid £11 million for Salah from Basel in 2014 so this is an excellent way of recouping their investment and getting his wages off the book. Salah’s wages are probably not much in the grand scheme of what the club is paying its other stars but any bit off the books help. This decision also answers the question of whether or not Jose Mourinho had plans to bring Salah back in to the first team fold next season.

Perhaps the Blues can still bring him back after the 2016 season if he plays the way he did these past few months. He never impressed at Chelsea the way he has at Fiorentina but he has also not been given the same run of matches. It is also an entirely different playing for a club like Chelsea with the pressure and expectations than playing for Fiorentina. Regardless of the reasons for his success in Italy compared to England, if Mohamed Salah continues to play like he is now then his signing will be some excellent business for the Viola.
