Chelsea FC To Offer Patrick Bamford New Deal

The striker carrying Middlesbrough on his back to Premier League promotion, is about to be given a new contract with Chelsea FC, according to the Daily Mail. Patrick Bamford is on loan this campaign with the English Championship 3rd place side, Middlesbrough, and has been firing on all cylinders.

The 21-year-old goal-scorer has  found the net 17 times in the Championship campaign, while scoring once in the Capital One Cup and another in the FA Cup. His FA Cup goal brought joy to Chelsea supporters as it meant knocking out Manchester City from the competition, on the same day the Blues themselves were shockingly defeated and removed from the competition by Bradford City.

With those 19 goals on his stat sheet, Jose Mourinho must bring him back to Chelsea this summer and resist the temptation to send him back out on loan. Bamford’s current Chelsea deal expires at the end of next season, and the club would be wise to keep him under control for years to come. The England under-21 star will be lighting up the scoreboard for both club and country, and hopefully Mourinho gives him a chance to win a roster position in the Chelsea first team.

In addition to his time at Middlesbrough, Bamford has also gone out on loan to MD Dons and Derby County. While it seems to be a running theme with Chelsea to have an army of young players out on loan across Europe, an exception should be made with Bamford. He could support a striking corps which has been injury prone.

Diego Costa has found it difficult to be available for selection due to suspension and injury, Loic Remy has had his share of injuries, and Didier Drogba is not getting any younger. Bamford would also help the Blue with their Premier League Homegrown player quota.

It should be noted that John Terry is currently the only Chelsea academy player of note to crack the starting 11 in a consistent manner. It leaves me to wonder what Chelsea youth players truly feel about their prospects of playing for the Chelsea first team some day? Do Izzy Brown, Dominic Solanke, and Lewis Baker truly believe they will have a future at Chelsea?

Roman Abramovich has spent a fortune on the youth program, and the fruits of this labor are currently out on loan in Europe, or sold to other clubs to finance the purchases of established Champions League players for the Chelsea first team. I don’t have a problem with doing business this way, as Chelsea are winning and playing fantastic football while performing well fiscally as well.

However if the club has a young, proven striker at its disposal, why not give him a chance to win a place in the side? If all else fails, he could go out on loan in the 2nd half of next season. Chelsea need a young, talented, goalscorer added to the ranks, and Patrick Bamford could fill that void.
