Chelsea FC Target Nathaniel Clyne Happy At Southampton

Chelsea FC target Nathaniel Clyne is out of contract at Southampton at the end of the 2015-16 season. If past history is any indication then the Saints should be selling Clyne at some point during the upcoming summer transfer window.

Clyne has been one of Southampton’s best players this season and has grown to become one of the best right backs in the league. This high level of play has made him an appealing target for the big clubs in England including Manchester United and of course Chelsea FC. The added bonus of purchasing a player like Clyne is that he is English and would help a club meet the homegrown requirements.

Along with his nationality Clyne is one of the best young players in the Premier League and has a very bright future ahead of him. He has said in the past that Chelsea FC was one of his favorite clubs growing up and Gianfranco Zola was his inspiration to become a footballer.

However Clyne claims that he is in no rush to make a move to another club this summer. Clyne told the Southampton Daily Echo, as quoted in Sky Sports, that he was happy at the club.

Clyne said, “I am enjoying my football for Southampton, playing week-in, week-out and it is an up-and-coming club. I am happy playing for Southampton and happy to stay at Southampton as well. My agent is negotiating, so I will just leave it with my agent and I am just going to concentrate on playing my football.”

The last bit is the most interesting as he claims that he is waiting for a deal from Southampton but that his agent is negotiating. The Saints have shown a proclivity to selling some of their best players and have actually improved as a result of selling players like Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren to other clubs.

Players like Clyne do not stay at their original clubs very long as they try to take the next step in their careers. The only thing that may prevent him from moving to Chelsea FC would be a ridiculous price tag.

Last summer José Mourinho said that the Blues refused to pay £30+ million for Luke Shaw because it would upset the balance of the team and the dressing room. Paying that much money or close to it for an unproven young player is not something that Mourinho likes to do although the blues have done it with great success with Eden Hazard and Oscar.

If needing to fulfill the homegrown requirement is the only reason that Chelsea pursues a player like Clyne then it would be silly to pay out the nose for him. The Blues have plenty of young English talent that they can use to load up the squad and provide depth and meet these requirements without ruining their good Financial Fair Play standing. Clyne would be an excellent addition to that club but it must be at the right price.
