Chelsea FC: Jose Mourinho Takes Strong Stance On Petr Cech

It is not usual for goalkeepers to have long transfer sagas but it appears that that might be the case for Chelsea FC’s former number one keeper Petr Cech. Ever since Thibaut Courtois took over as the number one keeper for Chelsea the rumor mill has begun to spin and has linked Cech with a number of clubs.

The Czech Republic international has been linked with a club or two in every major league in Europe. In France the rumored destinations are PSG and AS Monaco, in Italy they are AS Roma and both Milan clubs, in Germany it is Borussia Dortmund, and in England they are Arsenal or Liverpool. Many of these clubs appear set at the keeper position but Cech would be an immediate upgrade over any of the incumbents.

As the season winds down, the speculation continues to grow and Chelsea FC manager José Mourinho was asked his stance on the subject. Mourinho responded with his usual candor and spoke from his heart.

He said, as quoted in The Guardian, “One thing is José Mourinho and another is Mr Abramovich, and another thing is the board, because the board is a little bit of me and a little bit of other people. If it was me, if it was my decision, the decision is Petr to stay. That’s it. It would be my decision for Petr to stay. Even against his will? Yes”.

Mourinho went on to emphasize Cech’s importance to the club and claimed that the Blues would not have won the Premier League without him.  Cech did play very important matches for Chelsea and also came on in relief of Courtois when he suffered the head injury against Arsenal and played at his usual best.

If Cech is insistent on leaving then Mourinho has conceded that he has given everything to the club and deserves “everything” from the club. However there are some limits to what “everything” means.

Mourinho also said that he does not want Cech to go to an English club and it is understandable why. Cech is still one of the best goalkeepers in the world and if Chelsea do not have to strengthen a direct rival then why would they.

The Blues should give Petr Cech his choice of destination regardless of the price but they should not allow him to move to an English club. There may be a lot of sentimentality and emotions surrounding the departure of the club legend but at the same time this is a business and in business you do not give your competitors any advantage.
