90 Points

Sitting on 83 points now Chelsea have wrapped up their first league title in Mourinho’s second tenure after  leading since week one. While top of the table since the start and second in goals scored, recently the Blue’s have been criticized for playing too pragmatic and boring of football on their way to the trophy.

Only six times has a team achieved 90 points in a season (2x Chelsea, record 95 pts. in 04/05).

Reaching a point echelon like that would certify what has been a great season for the club when looked back at years from now. 90 points is the same amount Arsenal totaled with their famous ‘Invincibles’ and it’d be quite funny if in a season ‘boring boring Chelsea’ was chanted at the Emirates the Blue’s matched Arsenal’s best ever performance.

To achieve this Chelsea needs a two wins and a draw from Liverpool home, West Brom away, and Sunderland at home for the final match. Such results should be easily achieved based on the teams performance this campaign.

With Brendan Rodger’s ego collapsing upon himself like a dying star on Merseyside a win is needed to convince the Anfield faithful to wait until at least five weeks into next season to demand Klopp at the Kop. A loss for the Reds Sunday eliminates the potential of elimination at the Champions League group stage next season.

The Monday, May 18 trip to the Hawthornes to face the Baggies and manager/giveaway hat enthusiast Tony Pulis shouldn’t present much of a threat either as West Brom sits comfortably in 13th with 40 points.

Sunday, May 24 match should be a bit of revenge for Mourinho after last years shock defeat to the Black Cats, his first ever at Stamford Bridge. Former Blue Fabio Borini scored the dubiously awarded penalty given to Jozy Altidore for stepping out onto Cesar Azpilicueta’s sliding challenge. The loss took Chelsea out of the drivers seat for the title one week after the Gerrard slip match.

Now that the title is in Chelsea’s hands Jose should loosen the reigns on his little horses turned trophy winners and see if his squad can finish first in the goals scored category as well. The Blues currently sit in 2nd with 69, two behind Man City’s 71.
