Antoine Griezmann to Chelsea FC?

Jose Mourinho can cross off Premier League title from his “things to do” list within his first 4 years back in charge at Chelsea. The priority now shifts back to Europe and the Champions League. One of the Blues’ weakest areas in Europe is goal scoring prowess from midfield. Diego Costa and Eden Hazard cannot be relied on to get them much further than the group stage alone.

It is vital to have midfielders capable of rippling the back of the net. Since a 28 year old Frank Lampard is not available, it is time to use the summer window to make a move that will put Chelsea into the 2016 Champions League Final. According to the Daily Mail, Antoine Griezmann of Atletico Madrid is on Roman Abramovich’s radar for the summer window.

As talented as Oscar and Willian may be, the fact of the matter is they are distributors and ball winners, not goal scorers. Bayern Munich has Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben in attacking midfield, Real Madrid has Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, and the list goes on and on. Chelsea may have the Premier League Player of the Year in attacking midfield, but are in need of another world class scorer to supplement the squad.

The addition to attacking midfield in the summer is crucial for the English champions. Antoine Griezmann would be an immense upgrade for the Blues. The French international’s rumored fee is also immense, at 43.5 million pounds. The midfielder’s stat line is quite mouth-watering for the Stamford Bridge supporters.

According to Who Scored, this past club season, Griezmann totaled 25 goals over 44 appearances across all competitions. Who Scored also mentions his ‘strengths’ as finishing and holding the ball up. These are two key pieces Chelsea FC must add for next season. As much of a talent that Oscar is, I’m afraid he will never be the goal scorer Jose would like him to be.

Willian is another attacking midfielder that does not find the net, but his other qualities make up for that. Oscar totaled 34 total appearances for Chelsea this past season, only netting 7 times, according to Who Scored. For a player who is in the starting 11 more often than not, he needs to be firing the ball into the net more consistently. Oscar also has 8 assists, a number that should be much higher.

The Griezmann saga only grew when El Confidencial reported Jorge Mendes the ‘super-agent’ is now on the case. They noted his relationship with Mourinho has a key selling point that could tip Griezmann to Stamford Bridge. The next step in Chelsea’s dominance over England and Europe is the Champions League. The Blues have one title, yes, but there’s always room for more in Roman’s trophy cabinet.
