Chelsea FC: Selling Oscar For Raheem Sterling A Terrible Idea

There are numerous reports that Chelsea FC will sell Oscar and recent acquisition Juan Cuadrado to fund a move for Raheem Sterling this summer. According to The Daily Star, the Blues are prepared to sell off Juan Cuadrado after paying over 20 million for him just five months ago and are willing to give up on Oscar as the future of their midfield.

Here is why that is a terrible idea. Juan Cuadrado is still an unknown commodity in the Premier League and could very well end up being a better player than Raheem Sterling. He has only been in England for half a season and has yet to be given a real chance in the Chelsea starting eleven.

Cuadrado was a fantastic player in Serie A because of his dynamic style of play and his excellent pace. He also shined bright as one of the biggest stars of Colombia’s magical run in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Jose Mourinho has given up on players in a short time like Mohamed Salah, but at least Salah was given a full preseason to see if he could gel with his teammates before he was shipped off to another club.

The Blues sold Andre Schurrle to fund the move for Cuadrado and the least that he deserves is one full season to prove his worth. A player like him needs chances and if he comes good then it will prove that he was worth the fee, and if not then he will be replaced.

Oscar is another story altogether. He may have had an up and down season for Chelsea FC but he has still scored more goals and notched up more assists than Sterling this season. Even if you compare Oscar’s down year with Sterling’s “excellent” year last season, the statistics compare favorably for the Brazilian.

In 2013/14 Sterling had 10 goals and 7 assists as Liverpool finished second in the table and this season Oscar has 7 goals and 9 assists for a team that won the Premier League. Oscar is capable of magic as we have seen from his famous goal against Juventus, his free kick against Stoke City, and even his wonderful backheel assist to Eden Hazard this season against Manchester United.

There is no denying that Sterling is a good young player with a bright future but there is no way that he is worth more to a team than two proven internationals like Oscar and Juan Cuadrado. Oscar is the key to Brazil’s midfield and he has the ability to do the same for Chelsea FC and has done so in the past. He has struggled with injury and fatigue this season but that comes as no surprise considering his heavy involvement with the Brazil national team over the past three years.

The only advantage that Sterling has over the others is that he has an English passport and as is tradition, is overrated by the English media. He is a good young player who has excellent potential but there is absolutely no way he is worth the rumored fee of 40 million pounds.
