Chelsea FC: Comparing The 2005 And 2015 Champions

1 of 6

Back in December 2014 in a previous blogging life I asked a question that couldn’t be answered back then.

The question was:

“Which is better, the 2004/05 or 2014/15 team?”

I came to the conclusion that it was like comparing 2 racing cars, one a proven all conquering title winning car, the other fresh out of the factory and as yet untested over a period of time, although the computer stats suggested it is a winner.

I therefore couldn’t give a definitive answer because it was too early in the development of the new team, although the 2014/15 team did provisionally come out 1 point ahead of the 2004/15 version (out of 110 points).

With Chelsea FC confirmed as Premier League Champions for the 2014/15 season maybe now is the right time to ask the same question again.

The formation may have changed slightly with 2 Defensive Midfielders instead of 1 in the new version, but direct comparisons between the players can still be made of Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea FC.

I have taken what was widely regarded as Jose’s preferred choice of players from both seasons, and given each player a score based on performances and the impact the player had on that particular team, i.e. Robben’s overall score is affected by his injuries that year.

I’ve included all 1st team appearances including ones as a substitute in the figures.
