Chelsea FC youngster Marco Van Ginkel is a hot commodity in the loan market these days after spending the 2014/15 season at AC Milan. Van Ginkel made his debut and first start for the Rossoneri on September 23rd but he was brought off in the 34th minute after suffering an ankle injury.

He was deemed fit enough to start nearly two months later in November but suffered another ankle injury in training that kept him out until January. Unfortunately for the young Dutchman, injuries have become a very big part of his career so far. In fact, his early Chelsea career which was off to a promising start was derailed by a major knee injury suffered in League Cup match.

From that start at the end of January until the first week of March, Van Ginkel was used sparingly by manager Filipo Inzaghi and was often an unused substitute. Suddenly, something changed after the match against Fiorentina on March 16th and the youngster became the first choice midfielder for Inzaghi.

He would go on to start 11 matches in a row, making 16 appearances and 15 starts in Seria A, and finally began to assert himself in Serie A. His lone goal of the campaign came in a big showdown against AS Roma in which he opened the scoring with a deft finish from a Keisuke Honda cross. Van Ginkel putting together a nice run of form and it is a shame that the season had to end when it did for the youngster.

Inzaghi was impressed with the youngster’s play late on in the season and said that he wanted him back next season. He told ACMilan.com, “I believe that with a few additions this squad can get back to doing well. The injuries in January didn’t allow the squad to grow. Chelsea have lots of great midfielders and Van Ginkel needs to play. My wish would be, if possible, to keep him because he gives you a big hand during the week.”

Chelsea FC does indeed have a lot of great young midfielders and Van Ginkel may be on the outside looking in right now. He may ahead of youngsters like Ruben Loftus Cheek and Lewis Baker in midfield but it is hard to see him featuring in the Chelsea first team right now.

Another year on loan at a big club like AC Milan may be exactly what he needs to prove that he is capable of making that jump once again. The fact that he is already familiar with the team and the manager, though that can change quickly as this is Italy, is a big plus and there will be no initiation period for the youngster. If he is sent back there on loan next season he can slide back in to the lineup seamlessly as if he never left.

Milan is also in unfamiliar territory as a club that is unable to spend big on talent so taking a player like Van Ginkel on loan again would be an excellent move for them. Their new transfer policy of selling big time players and bringing in players on free transfers or on loan has not worked out for them but a mix of that and spending may be just what they need.
