Chelsea FC prospect Tomas Kalas is set to spend the 2015/16 football season on loan at Middlesbrough, according to Sky Sports.

The 22 year old centre-back will return to the Riverside Stadium, where he spent the 2nd half of the last campaign helping Boro to the Championship Play-Off final. Unfortunately, the restrictions of a short-term loan of that nature meant that he was unable to play in the final two games of the regular season, as well as being ineligible for the post-season run.
However, Sky’s sources believe that a deal has already been struck between all parties, with the Czech Republic international looking to help Boro finish the job this time around.
Kalas is not the only talent that Aitor Karanka has borrowed from Chelsea’s academy recently. Patrick Bamford spent the entirety of last season on loan at the Yorkshire-based club, a season that culminated with him being named Sky Bet Championship Player of the Year. The defender will undoubtedly be looking to emulate his team-mate.
this loan move presents him with the perfect opportunity to market himself to any potential buyer
This move, meanwhile, could be a very wise one for Kalas. With 22 years already on the clock, it’s hard to still class him as a youngster. Further to this, he is unlikely to be breaking in to the Blues first team anytime soon, and even appears behind both Nathan Aké and Kurt Zouma in the pecking order. If Kalas wants to be playing at the highest of levels in his career, he must ensure that he gets regular playing time right now.
Although he arrived at Stamford Bridge for a reported £5 million in July 2010, Kalas has repeatedly failed to make an impression on any of the five managers that the West London club have employed in that period. He has been spent the majority of his time on loan at Vitesse , FC Koln and Middlesbrough, making only four appearances for the Blues.

Frankly, at this point in his career Kalas should perhaps be thinking about moving on and this loan move could present him with the perfect opportunity to market himself to any potential buyer. He is almost guaranteed a starting spot in Karanka’s line-up and it could almost be said that this is crunch time for his career. There is no doubt that he can play for a top Championship side, but due to being afforded few opportunities in higher quality leagues, he will really have to prove his worth next year to show that he’s capable of standing at the heart of, for example, a top four club.
From Chelsea’s perspective, this may also be an ideal opportunity to part ways with him. Kalas only has two years left to run on his contract, so if the Blues want to get any sizeable sum for the defender they should be looking to deal him permanently by January. It wouldn’t be too surprising to discover that the loan has a clause enabling Boro to buy him for a pre-determined fee either.
All in all, it’s good to see that Kalas will have a platform on which to ply his trade next season, and perhaps also have an opportunity to further his career. He is in no doubt a decent player, but his career at Chelsea seems to have ceiling to which he is already too close.
So, Blues fans, what do you think? Will Tomas Kalas ever find a role in Chelsea’s senior squad? Vote in the poll and sound off in the comments below!
