Chelsea FC: Downsides of Signing Falcao

facebooktwitterreddit

Recently there has been much speculation as to the future of striker Radamel Falcao. The Colombian is still only 29 and has shown that he can be a world-class striker. However, he was poor last season so with rumours strongly linking him with a move to Chelsea FC, let’s discuss why he could potentially be a bad signing.

Falcao joined Manchester United on loan last season with a fierce reputation. His ability to finish in years past had created a highlight reel for the ages while the pace and skill the striker possesses has been made much of, and for good reason.

Furthermore, the tenacity he played with was envied by everyone around the world who saw him play. He finished with such power and grace so many times that he was undoubtedly among the world’s elite. This is the Radamel Falcao fans around the world saw in years past. Unfortunately it is not the version of Falcao that everyone saw perform in Manchester last season.

The 2014/15 version was a Falcao who looked out of sorts to say the least. His loan spell was nothing short of a disaster and the story of his failure has been covered time and time again. Despite this, the fact that the Columbian striker is now on the market is still news and rumors have surfaced that Chelsea FC are interested in reinvigorating the career of Falcao.

Of course this rumor would come up, a troubled star striker’s career hangs in the balance, who else could bring back the form of Falcao besides the great Jose Mourinho?

There are definite upsides in bringing the Colombian to Stamford Bridge although one of the biggest benefits will hinge on the nature of the contract. Should the Blues be able to convince Falcao to come over on affordable terms, as opposed to the gross deal he is currently on, then such a transfer could indeed be beneficial to the team.

Last year Falcao was a liability for Manchester United

There is a fine line between a player being an asset and a liability. How much the player is paid and his production on the field are the two opposing factors that determine his value. Last year Falcao was a liability for Manchester United. The amount they paid him was nowhere near representative of the production he put out. It wasn’t even close to the middle of the pendulum where most players reside.

However, it is uncertain that he’ll be willing to agree to a deal for much less than what he’s currently earning and Chelsea cannot afford to give in to excessive demands. The possibility of money being spent on a second striker who’s production and skill seemingly disappeared into the sewers of Manchester never to be found again are unfortunately likely.

Let’s hope Chelsea are careful with negotiations and don’t factor too much wishful thinking into them. Yes, he has been a formidable stiker in the past, but he seems to be on a decline that will only be augmented by his knee issues. The Blues just cannot over-spend on the current edition of Radamel Falcao.

What do you think then, Chelsea fans? Will Falcao be a good signing for Chelsea? How much will you be willing to pay him to see the Colombian turn out at Stamford Bridge? Sound off in the comments below!
