Chelsea FC youngster Ruben Loftus-Cheek is a hot commodity these days as teams looking for young players to take on loan begin to circle. The young Englishman also played well for an underwhelming England U21 side this summer at the U21 Euro Cup and has added to his already prodigious reputation.

Vitesse Arnhem manager Peter Bosz reportedly had his eye on the Chelsea youngster but has given up hope on bringing him on board. Bosz said, as quoted in the Daily Mail, “We know what we want, but it is also dependent on what happens at Chelsea. For example, we wanted to bring Ruben Loftus-Cheek here, but he is playing more at Chelsea now so a loan is impossible.”

The Blues have used Vitesse as a sort of minor league development club for some time now, having sent players like Lucas Piazon, Tomas Kalas, and Josh McEachran there in the past. None of those players have quite panned out but recent loanee Bertrand Traore appears to be the most likely player to succeed.

As for Loftus-Cheek, he began to feature more and more for Chelsea as the season wound down and the Premier League title was already decided. After the title was officially with Chelsea, Loftus-Cheek started two matches against West Brom and Liverpool and was solid but did not jump out as a can’t-miss player.

That is certainly down more to wanting to play within himself and not make any mistakes on such a big stage so judging him solely based on those performances would be foolish. England U21 manager Gareth Southgate sees the potential in the youngster as well as he was the youngest player in the squad at just 19 years old.

If Bosz and Southgate can see the potential in him then surely Jose Mourinho has as well. Mourinho even took a meaningless preseason game as an opportunity to teach Ruben a lesson as he questioned his defensive effort. The manager has a habit of publicly challenging players that he sees great potential in and did so with Eden Hazard just as recently as last season.

Loftus-Cheek is in an excellent position as the Blues want to keep him with the senior squad and appear ready to work him in to the lineup as a rotational player. His versatility will be key as he looks for his niche positition and the exposure to top flight football last season will be invaluable. Mourinho and Chelsea obviously see Ruben Loftus-Cheek as a player for the future and will take no chances with his development at another club.
