The midfielder once touted as the ‘next Frank Lampard’ is set to join Brentford FC on a four-year deal, according to Sky Sports. Josh McEachran will leave Chelsea FC after failing to break into the senior team and move to the Championship club.

The perennial loanee signed a five-year deal with Chelsea in 2011, but failed to impress the Stamford Bridge brass. After a torrid few years, the 22-year-old will join a Brentford side that was on the cusp of promotion to the Premier League last season, finishing in 5th place.

His time in West London was almost non-existent, as the once promising midfielder was constantly sent on loan to the likes of Swansea, Middlesbrough, Wigan and Watford. His most recent spell was with Chelsea’s ‘minor league team’, Vitesse Arnhem.

McEachran made just 22 appearances for Chelsea’s senior team and the England U21 international will now head to Brentford to revive his flagging career. Perhaps a fresh start in a new league with a new team is just what he needs. He will be undoubtedly eager to impress his new boss, Marinus Dijkhuizen, as he looks to tie down a starting spot.

This will be his first professional season only featuring for his parent club, which could alleviate expectations and lead to some positive performances. The player may never become the 2nd coming of Frank Lampard, but can still become a quality footballer in his home country.

At 22 years of age, he still has plenty left in the tank to make his way back to a top league, and a top side. Most Chelsea supporters will be disappointed that the midfielder once thought to be one of the core, young players leading the club into the next generation of Chelsea football is now departing without making a mark at Stamford Bridge. But, if Nemanja Matic can leave Chelsea and join another club (Benfica) where he impressed Jose Mourinho enough to buy him back, perhaps a player such as McEachran can do the same.

As an aside, Romelu Lukaku need not apply.

Matic may be a unique example, but it goes to show that a player once thought to be surplus to requirements can impress enough to rejoin a former side and win trophies. Or in Nemanja’s case both the League Cup and Premier League trophies. Jose and Roman Abramovich know best, and it is frankly a service to the lad to cut him loose to allow him to try and resurrect his career elsewhere, with seemingly less pressure, and an open horizon.

Good luck Josh, hope to see you soon.
