Chelsea FC: Celtic Interested In Kenneth Omeruo

After a few excellent seasons on loan at Middlesbrough, Chelsea FC’s Kenneth Omeruo is garnering a great deal of attention from clubs across Europe. The Nigeria international has reportedly been identified by Celtic of the Scottish Premiership as part of their summer transfer season.

Celtic have already signed three players this summer and are hoping to make the Chelsea youngster their fourth as they look to mount a title defense. Although they have been all but assured of a title every season until their primary rivals Rangers make their way back to the top flight. They finished third in the Scottish Championship last season but were defeated by Motherwell in the playoff final and will remain there for at least one more season.

As for Kenneth Omeruo, he and Middlesbrough experienced similar heartbreak last year as they were defeated by Norwich City in the Championship promotion playoffs as well. Boro looked all set to earn promotion and had some of the best players in the league firing on all cylinders but it was not meant to be. So joining Celtic would give Omeruo the experience of playing in a top-flight league although the talent level is comparable to the Championship in England.

The overall level of competition in England is also higher considering there is no club like Celtic that dominates the league the way they do in Scotland. However if he does make the move there, he will have the potential opportunity to play in the Champions League. By virtue of winning the Premiership, Celtic enters the second round of the Champions League qualifying rounds and has done well in Europe in the past.

That sort of experience of playing against the best of the best in Europe would be invaluable for a youngster who believes he can one day make it to the Chelsea FC first team. Omeruo told the BBC in May, “I’ve gained great experience and wait for the chance to be in the Premier League next season. I’m confident I can break into Chelsea’s first team at some point. Chelsea knows that too, if not I wouldn’t have a long-term contract.”

He may still be a few years away from achieving that goal because of the talent in front of him but there will be chances in the coming years. John Terry and Gary Cahill are both at the tail end of their careers and the Blues will be looking to revitalize their backline. It is very possible that we could one day see Kenneth Omeruo lining up alongside Kurt Zouma as Chelsea’s centerback partnership.
