In a matter of weeks, we have gone from expecting Victor Moses to leave permanently to Stoke City or joining another club on loan to hearing that he will be part of Chelsea FC’s squad next season.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes had the Nigeria international high on his list of wants this summer and the club reportedly tried to involve him in the deal that sent Asmir Begovic to Stamford Bridge. The initial reports surrounding that deal claimed that Stoke wanted £8m and Moses for the keeper but clearly that was not what happened.
Now Hughes says that the reason they were unable to sign Moses is because Chelsea FC and Jose Mourinho have plans to inclue the winger in the squad for next season. Hughes said to the Stoke Sentinel, “I think Chelsea have a view on Victor. What they’re thinking, we believe, is that they would possibly like to keep him. If they go into the market again that could change that idea.
Hughes continued, “Victor obviously came to us last year and did exceptionally well for us. There were a couple of injuries that hampered him unfortunately but he showed enough in his time with us that it made Chelsea very aware of the talent they have and what Victor could offer. It could be that Victor now plays a part at Chelsea.”

What Hughes said is what every Chelsea fan was thinking last season, that Moses is talented and showed us all what he was capable of at Stoke last season. However as we all know performing for Stoke and Chelsea are two very different things.
In his single season playing for the Blues, Moses was unspectacular in the Premier League but did make an impact in both the Champions League and Europa League. He was instrumental in the club’s run to the consolation prize/trophy that is the Europa League and even popped up with some important goals in the Champions League group stage.
There were also rumors that Mourinho wanted to recall Moses from his loan last winter after the club sold Andre Schurrle so he may rate him higher than most. If Mourinho is simply looking for depth and a player with a high work rate then Moses is his man. Another key component is that he must find a player who is ok with limited opportunities on the pitch as he obviously would not be first choice ahead of Willian.
At this point, if the Blues decide to keep Victor Moses then it would great for the depth of the squad but it is not the type of move that excites the fans. On the flip side of that though is that no matter who the club signs it is trophies that excite the fans and squad depth is vital to any title run.
