Deep into the summer, Chelsea FC find themselves on the outside looking in on all the big-name moves up to this point. Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool have all been making big splashes in the transfer market but the Blues have remained relatively quiet.

The transactions so far have included swapping players within the league, with Raheem Sterling going from Liverpool to City, and Petr Cech from Chelsea to Arsenal. How do these summer transfers and shifts of power impact the title race for the Blues? Do they need to make a splash? Or can they repeat with the team they have now?

Whatever your opinion is, there are many different ways in which the upcoming season could head, and still a ton of time for more things to change. However, it’s not fun to wait around. Let’s gather some early thoughts and fears!

One train of thought arising during the offseason is “why mess with anything that isn’t broken?”. While this is safe way to do business, Chelsea aren’t in a position to be playing safe. They are under pressure to perform both in the league and in Europe. However, given what the club has done so far in the transfer window, it’s almost as if they are content with just winning the league again.

Adding Radamel Falcao and losing Cech isn’t does exactly indicate that Chelsea will fare better in Europe. An even bigger issue is that with all of the club’s rivals making aggressive moves to compete and capture the Premier League, have Chelsea done enough to even be the favourites next season? Is adding Falcao a statement that you are ready to push forward, get better, and win the league? I don’t think so.

But the offseason continues on, the crazy rumors continue, and Chelsea are still void of a viable addition to their team. Falcao is a fun risk, but he isn’t really what you need to grow and develop as a squad.

Unless Chelsea land one of their crazy transfer dreams, this will not be a successful offseason for the club. You have to look at the team going into the season as of now, and compare it to last year’s squad. This team isn’t better, in fact I would say its worse. I would take Andre Schurrle and Cech over Juan Cuadrado and Falcao any day.

It is definitely too early to make predictions about where Chelsea will finish in the Premier League and in Europe, but it is concerning to see how they have treated this transfer window up to this point. They seem comfortable and not in any hurry to bolster their squad. A master Mourinho move? Perhaps. Or maybe its a bit of cockiness. I suppose we will see come August.
