Crystal Palace have announced that they will have the luxury of calling upon Patrick Bamford next season, after agreeing a deal with Chelsea FC to take him on a season long loan.

Speculation regarding the young striker’s immediate Stamford Bridge future heated up following his exclusion from Chelsea’s US touring party. Now, after rumours linking him with a move to Palace surfaced in the last few days, the deal is officially done with Alan Pardew’s club announcing it on Twitter.

This is probably the best move for the club, and most certainly for the player himself. If Bamford were not to go on loan, he would face the prospect of spending almost the whole season at Cobham, filling a third, or even fourth, choice striker role.

Furthermore, this also indicates that Loic Remy will be staying at Chelsea for the foreseeable future. With three strikers vital to a successful squad and Bamford now not applicable, it suggests that Remy will remain in West London to battle it out with Radamel Falcao for the second striker position. Unless Jose Mourinho intends to buy someone else of course…

Bamford had a incredibly successful loan spell last season at Middlesbrough. He netted 17 times in 38 Championship appearances while putting in performances that saw him be crowned Sky Bet Championship Player Of The Year.

On the back of such scintillating form, having the 21-year-old sit around and bench-warm would possibly be the worst thing for his career. Thus this news is a relief as he will have an opportunity to get proper game time and continue his development just across London.

This is also a step up for the striker. Crystal Palace are (now) a quality Premier League side that finished tenth last season. With the addition of the likes of Yohan Cabaye, this is definitely a club with ambition.

However, what may be worrying to Blues fans is the scrap that he will find himself in for a starting berth at Selhurst Park. Palace currently have Glenn Murray, Dwight Gayle, Marouane Chamakh, Frazier Campbell and Yaya Sanogo on their books in addition to Bamford. It is reasonably unclear whether Pardew is looking to offload a majority of these players, but there is an argument to be made that if Bamford is really as good as we think he is, he should be able to beat off this competition.

Remember, he’s no longer a fresh 18 or 19-year-old. He should really be making his mark at this level now.

For the time being, all Chelsea supporters will be wishing the youngster the best of luck, and hoping that he is able to take the next step on his journey to becoming Stamford Bridge’s main man.
