Diego Costa has come out in support of Chelsea FC’s new acquisition Radamel Falcao, stating that he believes the Colombian will succeed at Stamford Bridge next season.

Falcao’s move to the Blues has been criticised in some quarters due to the appalling form he suffered with Manchester United last season. Costa, however, has brushed off the hate by saying that he is looking forward to reigniting the strike partnership that the two had at Atlético Madrid.

‘I’ve spent a couple of seasons with Falcao and I reckon things went fairly well. He did a lot for me and he’s a great striker.

‘He’s a top bloke too. He gets on very well with his team-mates and he will help us a lot off the field, in the dressing room.

‘He is a really big-hearted guy and that’s the most important thing.’ (via Sky Sports).

Falcao spent two seasons at the Madrid club, from 2011 to 2013. Costa was injured for the first part of the 2011/12 campaign, before being loaned to Rayo Vallecano in January. The following season is where the partnership really burgeoned, with the pair netting 54 competitive goals between them.

Now, a couple of years later, the two will team together again in the royal blue of Chelsea FC.

Regarding last season, Costa even went so far as to say that it was lucky that Falcao had such a torrid time at Old Trafford, as the Blues will now be able to benefit from world-class talent.

‘I think it’s good for us that he didn’t have the best of seasons as that’s why he’s now with us. Radamel knows the sort of manager Mourinho is. He’s a manager who is liked by players because he trusts and backs them. He doesn’t sign a player just for the sake of it.’

What is perhaps most interesting of Costa’s comments is the fact that Jose Mourinho has chosen to go with only one striker with this Blues squad, thus raising the question how Falcao can flourish if Diego is to remain in his role.

One option is for them to revert to the positions they played at Atlético: Falcao would be the main man with Costa playing just off him. However, this is highly unlikely as it would necessitate a change in system from Mourinho, and more importantly the removal of Costa from the role in which he scored 20 goals in 26 league appearances last season.

It will be intriguing to see how this pans out. It’s hard to see Falcao succeeding without something bad happening to Costa, and no-one wants that.

In the meantime, let’s hope for some more of this:
