Chelsea FC And Wembley Banter v Tottenham Hotspur
By Lee Fraser
Jimmy Greaves, the Chelsea FC and Tottenham Hotspur legend (yes, it was possible to be both back in the old days!) uttered the immortal words:
It’s a funny old game
The rivalry and the banter between Chelsea FC and Rottenham Spurs goes back a century and was highlighted again as recently as Chelsea’s last trip to Wembley Stadium in the 2015 League Cup.

The Blues head back to Wembley twice this weekend, firstly with the Chelsea Ladies in the Women’s FA Cup Final on Saturday, followed by the men in the Community Shield on Sunday taking on that other team from the wastelands of North London, Arsenal.
Let’s relive Spurs’ cringe-worthy build up to our last match at Wembley, where we won the first of last season’s two trophies.
Straightforward victories against Bolton Wanderers, Shrewsbury Town and Derby County led us to a two-legged semi-final win against
Loserpool
Liverpool, and there we were, back at our second home, Wembley, for a final against the Spurs.
A major difference between the boys from North London and the men of West London soon became apparent in the weeks prior to the game itself.
Whilst Chelsea were concentrating on winning the Premier League and attempting to beat PSG in the Champions League, the Lillywhites were attempting to qualify for next year’s secondary European competition whilst singing songs, making “Wembley Cup Final Party Tool kits” and voting to turn Wembley Stadium’s already white arch, white!
No wonder their players didn’t turn up for the match itself. They were exhausted, poor little soldiers.
In celebration of their remarkable successes pre-match I think we ought to subject ourselves to this musical masterpiece, a re-working of Chas and Dave’s classic song released for the 1987 FA Cup Final. Coincidentally they lost that one as well, to Coventry!
I heartily apologise if your ears are now deeply offended, but it was for charity after all, and the intention at least was honourable!
Fans of other teams loved it, well at least they loved the banter ammunition it gave them!
Not content with subjecting their fans to such a cringe-worthy offering, Spurs went one stage further and proved once and for all that they are a small club with this “small team mentality” offering!
This proved the final straw for some Spurs fans as the video comments showed:
Determined to exact some revenge for all the banter they had to endure in the build up, the Tottenham fans set out to win a Twitter poll to turn the famous Wembley arch white.
The fact that the arch was already white was forgotten in their desperation to actually win something and Twitter went into meltdown.
There was an account specifically set up to drum up support:
At least they won something that week and their fans were ecstatic!
It was just a shame that as their fans walked out of the stadium after the match it was dark enough to see that the arch had turned royal blue after another Chelsea FC Wembley victory!
There is only one way to end this blog, and that is of course with the Chelsea FC post-match interviews and celebrations as captured perfectly in this video by 442oons.
