Mourinho was about to enter the third year on his original four-year deal, and has no doubt delighted Blues fans everywhere by committing himself to the Stamford Bridge faithful for the foreseeable future.
The boss has frequently indicated his desire to stay in West London for an extended period of time, and this is merely confirmation of that. He expressed his joy with the new deal in the club’s press release:
"I said when I returned here two years ago that I have a special feeling for this club and nothing changed. It is the club closest to my heart and I am very happy to know I will be staying here for a long time."
Mourinho rejoined the Blues in the summer of 2013, and has continued having success. After stating that he would need a season to bring the Chelsea squad up to championship-material, he led the club to a league and cup double last time out.
This season, however, Chelsea have their sights set on European glory. The one great failure, if you can call it that, in Jose Mourinho’s career is that he has not won the Champions League with the club that he has become synonymous with. He will undoubtedly be eager to rectify this and deliver Europe’s premier club competition for the second time in Chelsea’s history.
The Portuguese’s first spell in charge ended with a pretty acrimonious divorce between him and owner Roman Abramovich. On the back of that, the return of The Special One to Stamford Bridge seemed like a fan’s dream that would never come true. However, the two somehow mended their relationship enough to allow for Jose’s return two seasons ago and now they are back on relatively good terms.
The boss has approached this stint at Chelsea in a way that he has never done so before. He has been constantly preaching about the long-term, and has signed several talents with the future in mind. Furthermore, he has been a keen supporter of the Stamford Bridge expansion plans, and appears eager to be part of the next chapter in Chelsea’s history.
If there is one man who will be able to guide the Blues through a relatively cash-strapped period of time, it would be Jose Mourinho. And you bet that he would be more successful than Arsene Wenger was.
This extension is great news for all associated with Chelsea FC but now the focus turns to this afternoon’s meeting with Swansea City. Mourinho will need to apply some of his magic to get his team clicking once kick-off comes.
