Chelsea FC Don’t Miss Petr Cech – Jose Mourinho
Chelsea FC fans got a bit of a treat on Sunday after a tough Saturday afternoon against Swansea City. Having watched their side stumble to a draw against the Swans and seeing Thibaut Courtois sent off harshly, there was still more possible pain to come in watching Petr Cech make his Premier League debut for Arsenal FC.

Instead, Chelsea fans watched as Cech made two errors against the Hammers and was punished for both. The first came on a misjudged move on a cross and the second was allowing a ball to squirm past his near post that looked like it could have been easily saved.
In contrast to Cech, Asmir Begovic looked solid in goal as he came on for Courtois after the Belgian was shown a red. He failed to save the penalty by Bafetembi Gomis but that would have just been the icing on top of a good competitive debut. The Bosnian keeper was called in to action several time against Swansea and made great saves against Jefferson Montero and Wayne Routledge.

It was perhaps that excellent performance from Begovic that prompted Jose Mourinho to proclaim that Chelsea FC do not need Petr Cech anymore. Mourinho said, as quoted by Sky Sports that, “We don’t miss Petr. We’ve got a good keeper, the problem with Petr is not that we miss him because we have two excellent keepers.
He continued and said, “The problem with Petr is that an opponent is better than before. Thibaut and Asmir are two fantastic keepers. My club did very well by getting a keeper on time and not on the August 31.”
Mourinho is right in that Chelsea does indeed have two excellent goalkeepers. They had two world-class keepers last season and while Begovic may not be quite world class he is still an established international and a Premier League veteran.
However he is also right that it is unfortunate that Arsenal is better as a result of our summer moves. It may not have been apparent that Cech is an upgrade for the Gunners this past weekend but after he has time to gel with his defenders he certainly will be. Teams do not djust to new players overniught and there will be a learning curve for all those involved.
The same can be said about Chelsea and Begovic as he prepares for his first competitive start in Chelsea colors against Manchester City this weekend. It will be a trial by fire of sorts for the Bosnian keeper but as Mourinho said, he is a fantastic keeper and is ready for the challenge.
