According to reports from publications with varying degrees of respectability, the Daily Star and the Metro, Chelsea FC are chasing forward Alexandre Lacazette. The France international would cost the Blues £21m if a transfer were to go through even if that sounds like a quaint sum for a 30-goal scorer in today’s market.

Lacazette banged in 31 goals for Olympique Lyonnais last season after scoring 22 in 2013-14 to prove that he is no one-season wonder. The 24 year old was also voted the Ligue 1 Player of the Year last season after breaking the club’s scoring record and winning the Golden Boot.

It is obvious that the Frenchman can find the back of the net but don’t the Blues already have a French forward sitting on the bench in Loic Remy? The Metro reports contend that any transfer involving Lacazette would include Remy being sent the other way as Jose Mourinho continues to juggle his striker rotation.

Diego Costa is first choice but is described as “struggling” because he has yet to score in his first two matches this season. Next up is apparently Falcao as he was the first striker off the bench when Chelsea were chasing a goal against Manchester City even though Remy started the Community Shield against Arsenal.

As for Lacazette, he signed a new deal with Lyon tying him to the club until 2019 to try and quash and transfer speculation. However we have seen these contract extensions being used to drive up the price tag for a player rather than tie him down to a club. Even if that were the case, why would Lacazette force a move to Chelsea at this point in his career?

He is first choice at a club that is on its way up and will be playing Champions League football this season. The Frenchman may be seduced by the prospect of playing for a top club and raising his profile but he would have to beat out Diego Costa for the honor of performing in Chelsea blue.

There is little doubt that he would be an improvement over the shadow of Falcao but is he better than Loic Remy? Remy has seasons of 20 goals in Ligue 1 and has an excellent goalscoring record in the Premier League. He is a proven goalscorer in a league that is more physical and more difficult than Ligue 1 and he impressed when called upon last season.

Is he truly world-class? Perhaps not but the jury is still out on Lacazette on that matter as well. He would be an excellent addition to any club but perhaps the money spent towards bringing in the dynamic Frenchman could be better utilized shoring up the Chelsea FC backline.
