Chelsea FC great Michael Essien enjoys reggae music

Ex-Chelsea FC midfielder Michael Essien just took to Instagram to post a video of himself staring into a camera while headbanging to reggae music.

Yeah, seriously.

Ummm.

It’s not so much the headbanging, if you can call it that, but more his fixated eyes that really weirds me out.

He’s looking into your soul.

In all fairness though, it’s always nice to have an excuse to write about greats from Chelsea’s past.

The Ghanaian spent nine years contracted at Stamford Bridge, after joining the club in August 2005. The £26million fee that Chelsea paid Lyon was a club record at the time, and his arrival in West London marked the end of a transfer saga that would put John Stones to shame.

The Blues had about five bids rejected over the course of the previous summer, with a war of words between the respective club officials dominating the headlines. Essien himself refused contract renewals with the French side and made clear his wish to join Jose Mourinho’s team. Swap deals involving Tiago and even Didier Drogba were proposed before the record-breaking settlement.

Despite the hefty fee, it is hard to claim that the then 22-year-old did not justify his price tag. Essien would make 256 competitive appearances over eight seasons with Chelsea (one season was spent on loan at Real Madrid where he reunited with Mourinho) and was key to the club’s success over the period.

The Ghanaian won 8 major honours with the Blues which comprised of 1 League Cup, 2 Premier League titles, 4 FA Cups and most importantly the Champions League. His performances in the 2006/07 campaign saw him be named Chelsea Player Of The Year as well.

He scored some unbelievable goals too.

Unfortunately, recurring knee issues meant that Essien could no longer perform at the English top level and he left Stamford Bridge in January 2014. A year-and-a-half stint with AC Milan followed but the midfielder only featured 20 times for the Italian club.

The 32-year-old joined Greek outfit Panathinaikos this summer but immediately suffered a further injury setback that required surgery on his knee. As a result he is yet to appear for his new club.

In the meantime, he has been quietly helping Chelsea secure transfer targets. New acquisition Abdul Baba Rahman stated that he spoke to Essien before accepting the Blues offer, and his fellow countryman even took to Twitter to wish the youngster well at Stamford Bridge.

However, until he gets match-fit, Essien will continue staring into your soul.
