Filipe Luis watched Atletico Madrid game with Diego Costa when he was at Chelsea FC.

Former Blues full-back Filipe Luis has revealed that he never truly left Atletico Madrid when he came to Stamford Bridge and his passion for the club forced him to watch all their games. Another Atleti alumnus in Diego Costa would join him.

Speaking to Spanish publication AS, Luis stated that he always missed the comforts of the Vicente Calderon and that he continued to keep in touch with his ex-teammates throughout his season away.

"I always missed the club. I was never able to move on. Perhaps I should have forgotten about them but I kept on watching the games and talking to former team-mates or sending them messages. I never cut the roots I have in this club."

Luis was one of Diego Simeone’s original men and having grown with the team, it is understandable why he felt such a strong connection with them. In fact, he recalls a story of him and Costa watching an Atleti game on a laptop in the hotel lobby. That was how much the red and white stripes meant to him.

"We would meet up to see their games. I remember when they played the Super Cup and Diego and myself were in the team hotel and we went down to the reception of the hotel to see the game on the computer."

Unfortunately, the left-back’s stint in England was a failure. He failed to impress Jose Mourinho enough to get a first-team role and thus he was often left sitting around on the bench.

The good news is that Chelsea were willing to let him move on (as opposed to indoctrinating him into the loan army) and more importantly that Atletico wanted him back. The deal was pushed through with relative ease and Luis is now back playing regular football for Simeone.

"I’m very happy. I was delighted when I found out that Atletico wanted to take me back. It’s the best thing that could have happened to me."

It is hard to dispute that. Luis came to Stamford Bridge as one of the best full-backs in the world but Mourinho’s loyalty to the likes of Cesar Azpilicueta meant that the Brazillian needed to show something incredible to unseat him. This is not to pin the blame on Mourinho, though, as Dave has shown that he is more than capable in the starting role.

This is a rare situation in football where compassion has been shown by all parties involved and the optimal solution has been reached. Luis, even in the one campaign, showed himself to be a true professional and it is great that he is back enjoying his football.

What more could you ask for really?
