Fiorentina are reportedly interested in signing Kurt Zouma from Chelsea FC

Frequent dance partners Fiorentina are looking to make Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma a part of their team in the January transfer window, according to reports.

Italian publication Corriere dello Sport (via The Daily Star) believe that the Serie A club will make a move for the young defender when the mid-season window opens. While Jose Mourinho will most likely block any deal, the arrival of John Stones (should it materialise) has opened up a slight opportunity for a Zouma departure.

"The 20-year-old, who has one cap for France, is unlikely to leave Stamford Bridge, with boss Jose Mourinho eyeing a long future for him.But with their pursuit of Everton’s John Stones expected to be reprised in the New Year, the Blues could let Zouma leave."

Personally, I cannot see a Kurt Zouma deal happening in any situation. The Frenchman is undisputedly the most promising youngster at Stamford Bridge and his four league appearances this season out of a possible four reflects that. With John Terry and Gary Cahill ageing, Zouma is the future of the club (at least at the back) and the Stamford Bridge officials know that.

Furthermore, the lack of depth in the squad’s defence means that even if Stones was brought in, the Blues cannot really afford to let a defender go.

There is also the potential of a formidable defensive partnership. At only 21 years of age, Stones’ arrival could result in a world-beating relationship at the heart of the Chelsea backline that could last 10 years. That was the mouthwatering prospect that Blues fans were dreaming of over the summer and it is unlikely that Mourinho will jeopardise such a long-term proposition.

However, money talks in not just football, but the world in general. Roberto Martinez and Bill Kenwright may disagree with the sentiment but it would be interesting to see how Chelsea would deal with a hefty offer from the Italians.

This is especially relevant given the current Stamford Bridge redevelopment plans. As the project will require a large amount of funds, the club’s transfer kitty may decrease significantly (see Arsenal). This means that Chelsea need to find other ways to increase revenue, such as commercial deals like the Wipro agreement that was recently announced. Additionally, the club may be more vulnerable to attractive bids over the next few years.

Having said that, an offer for Zouma would still need to be astronomical for Chelsea to accept it and Fiorentina are unlikely to be able to afford such a sum.

Real Madrid and Barcelona though…hmmmm…

Well we can almost guarantee that Zouma won’t be off to Fiorentina and certainly not this winter anyway.
