Chelsea FC Camp Left ‘Sad’ Says Nemanja Matic

Following the 3-1 defeat at the hands of Everton, Chelsea FC’s Nemanja Matic has reacted to the result

Chelsea FC central midfielder and Branislav Ivanovic’s Serbian compatriot, Nemanja Matic, has admitted to the fact that the loss at Everton has left everyone extremely sad and demoralised in the Chelsea camp.

Chelsea slumped to their third defeat of the season in five league games as they went down 3-1 at Goodison Park. A hat-trick from substitute Steven Naismith saw their title defense take another massive hit.

With Manchester City bagging another win and making it 5 out of 5 with 15 points at the top of the table, Chelsea are now 11 points behind them and it suddenly looks like Jose Mourinho’s men are already out of the title race before it has even started.

Matic summed up Chelsea’s present situation perfectly, albeit in rather simple terms.

"Everyone is sad because of the result. Obviously we feel bad. We are in a difficult moment, and having four points after five games is not normal for our team."

The Serbian also gave his thoughts on what he perceived as a slightly unjust result.

"If you saw this game, I cannot say we deserved to win but we deserved a draw. Chelsea are not used to being on runs like we are at the moment but this is the reality. We have to work hard to get our game back to the way we played last season. I really don’t know what’s happened but it’s not good for us and we need to see what we can do better as a team."

Matic may have felt that the team put in a performance that was worthy of a draw, a logic which may emanate from a screamer of a goal he scored to pull Chelsea level, but in reality his comment is hard to believe when we witnessed the Chelsea defence being cut open by a fast-paced and brilliant Everton side.

Last season, Matic was a shield for the Chelsea rear guard and established himself as one of the best central defensive midfielders in the world. This season, though, he has been a disappointment much like the rest of the side. He has been found to be out of position on some occasions while his ability to intercept with his precise tackles in the middle of the pitch has also waned a lot.

However, Matic rightly pointed out that the team needs to go back to the drawing board to find a new direction and a new plan and come back with a refreshed belief. It is only with this that they will be able to turn around their current misfortunes and make something of this 2015/16 Premier League campaign.

Chelsea are currently languishing in 17th place with a possibility of entering the relegation zone if Newcastle United win against West Ham on Monday. This is a shocking position for a club of Chelsea’s stature to be in. Matic and his teammates need to find a solution as soon as possible.
