With the Syrian refugee crisis dominating the headlines, many football clubs have pledged to donate to the humanitarian crisis. Real Madrid pledged €1 million to help refugees in Spain and German giants Bayern Munich have also pledged €1 million along with promises of football training camps and German lessons for the refugees. Now Chelsea FC has stepped up to the plate in a bid to help the millions of displaced peoples.

The club announced on ChelseaFC.com that they would be donating €1 per ticket sold from matches against Maccabi Tel Aviv on September 16th and £1 per ticket against Arsenal on September 19th. If Stamford Bridge sells out then that would come out to roughly £70,000 and that is not all. The club is also setting up what they call “bucket collections” to allow fans to donate as much as they like and in another show of support, “the club will match all donations made on the day”.

Through the club’s charity partner Plan International, the club plans to auction off the players’ match shirts from the match against Maccabi Tel Aviv as they feature the charity’s logo on the back. The total money raised from those shirts is unknown at this point but we can imagine it would be more than the £70k raised from the ticket sales. Funds raised by Plan International will be used to help Syrian refugees in Egypt and the initiatives they are heading “will benefit nearly 60,000 Syrian and Egyptian children over the next two years.”
This humanitarian crisis is making waves around the world with refugees quite literally washing up on the shores of many European nations. Regardless of one’s political leanings, the simple fact is that innocent people are caught in the crossfire and in their desperation are going anywhere in the world that they will be accepted. It is no surprise that football clubs and their supporters are among those leading the drive to raise funds.
Fans of Arsenal held up banners saying “refugees welcome” and the club itself is doing its part by donating portions of ticket sales from matches this month to help support the refugees. There are very few times that Chelsea, Arsenal, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich supporters can all agree on one thing but helping those in need is at the very top of that list.
