Eva Carneiro and Jon Fearn may be allowed to return to the Chelsea FC bench for the match against Arsenal on Saturday

The Telegraph is reporting that after just over five weeks, Dr. Eva Carneiro and Jon Fearn may be allowed to return to the Chelsea FC dug-out for Saturday’s match versus Arsenal. Both had been suspended following the first match of the season against Swansea where Dr. Carneiro and Fearn had rushed onto the pitch to treat Eden Hazard in the dying moments of added time. A furious Jose Mourinho later suspended them for being “impulsive and naive”.

Carneiro has reportedly been absent from duty for much of this time – presumably due to the legal advice she has been receiving from Mishcon de Reya, an International law firm based in London. Jon Fearn, meanwhile, has continued to work with the medical staff behind the scenes, despite also having his duties reduced. Carneiro has been requested to report to Cobham but a place on the bench could also be in the offing.

"Fearn has not, as yet, resumed his place on the Chelsea bench but is expected to eventually do so. Whether Carneiro is able to do the same would appear to remain in doubt although there have been claims the duo will be in place for Saturday’s Premier League match at home to Arsenal."

Rumours have been circulating that Eva could have legal grounds to pursue constructive dismissal. Basically what this means is that if Eva resigns and is able to prove in court that Chelsea have been in serious breach of her contract, she would have grounds to claim compensation from the club. As a result of this, it is not known whether Carneiro will return to the bench at any point.

Since the incident took place on August 8, several governing bodies such as FIFA and the British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine (BASEM) have voiced their concerns. In fact, some have gone so far as to accuse the Blues boss of sexism, claiming that his post-match comments about Carneiro being naive was directed towards women in general.

While the latter of these seems a bit excessive, it is generally accepted that Mourinho was a bit over-zealous with regard to his reaction. Medical staff are present to safeguard the players’ health, not act as a tactical prop. Mourinho claimed that it was evident that Hazard was not hurt, but it is always better to be safe than sorry in such situations. Carneiro and Fearn were simply doing what they are paid for.

The boss, though, has insisted several times that the suspension was temporary and both Eva and Jon could be allowed to return to the bench in the future. With the 4-0 win over Maccabi Tel-Aviv on Wednesday, the atmosphere around Stamford Bridge has improved and Mourinho has perhaps tapped into the fresh positivity to reinstate the pair.

The coming few days should make things a lot clearer. However, fully expect the media to blow everything out of proportion if matters don’t turn out to be rosy.
